OCTOBER 2007
SCHOLAR PROFILE

Scholar ProfileDemetra Gibson '08
Batipps Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Major: Political and Social Thought
Home Town: Boston, Massachusetts

Activities: My extracurricular activities around grounds include chairing the Peer Advisor Program, which assists Black first-year and entering transfer students with their college transition by providing personalized, sensitive support and counseling. I am a founder and President of Global Medical Training at UVa; a branch of a medical humanitarian organization. I am involved in Daniel Hale Williams Pre-Medical Society and Black Voices Gospel Choir, as well as being an International Student Ambassador. I am a member of the National Society for Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honour Society and Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society. My hobbies include traveling, dancing, reading and playing the flute.

Goals: In the future I wish to be a medical physician. I am alarmed by the number of patients by the large gap in health outcomes which currently occur by race and income. This has made me particularly interested in reducing health disparities and improving access to and quality of health care in underprivileged communities.
