He has worked at the CBBB since 1984 and he resides in Washington DC. Rod serves as the head of the Consumer Relations Committee for the ASE Board and began serving as President of the Serpentine Society in 2006. Steph ShawExecutive Vice Chair Steph graduated with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Bioethics. She is currently living in New York City where she works at Realbirth Childbirth Education and Postpartum Support Center (realbirth.com), recently rated the best parenting resource in New York City by New York Magazine. Kimball B. WinnTreasurer Kim has worked for the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms since 1987 and is responsible for providing information technology services and products to the Senate. He has been active in the Serpentine Society since its inception and is currently serving as treasurer. Kim and his partner live in Falls Church, Virginia. Email: kim@serpentinesociety.org Claire KaplanClaire Kaplan Ph.D. (GED), Director of Sexual and Domestic Violence Services at the University of Virginia Women's Center since 1991, has been a community and national activist in the feminist, anti-violence, democratic socialist, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights movements for many years. She is a founding member of UVA Pride, UVA's LGBT Faculty, Staff and Graduate Student Association, and is actively working on Grounds to achieve equity for all students, faculty, and staff. Claire lives outside of Charlottesville with her life partner of 19 years and 11 year-old daughter, along with their two dogs, Silver and Copper. Douglas ChambersAssociate Professor, the University of Southern Mississippi Email: doug@serpentinesociety.org Helen Lee McComasScholarship (Chair), Communications Helen is a freelance journalist and illustrator specializing in science and medicine news. She spent 30 years working in newspapers, starting as an editor at The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, then working at the Cincinnati Post and the Baltimore Sun. In Cincinnati, she wrote and edited a weekly outdoors page that ran in the Post sports section. For 22 years, she was an editor at Knight Ridder Tribune, the Washington-based international news service owned by Knight Ridder Inc. and The Tribune Co. She was part of the Knight Ridder teams that covered the 1990-91 Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina and the U.S. invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. At Knight Ridder Tribune, Helen progressed from editing, writing and research to working as a senior editor-illustrator. She is a professional artist, working principally in watercolor, acrylics and drawing media, and her works have appeared often in juried shows at at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va. Helen is a member of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association in Washington, D.C., and is active in the national keeshond dog rescue effort. Her keeshond Eli qualified as a therapy dog, and she and Eli visited Northern Virginia nursing homes as part of the Fairfax County Pets on Wheels program. Helen and her partner, Nancy Craig, married in Vancouver, British Columbia, in February 2006. They live in Baltimore's historic Fells Point neighborhood with Eli and Nancy's five cats, most of them big fellows of the Maine coon breed.
