Alumni Relations CommitteeSo, you seem to think I'm graduatingWe hate to bring it up, but we assume that most of you are (however grudgingly) planning to graduate in May. Our goal is to help you with the transition through networking and advice from current alumni, and through helping you with the details, like figuring out lifestyle and geographic changes. We also want to get you excited about life after graduation. We wish we didn't have to leave, but we can easily stay connected and involved in the University community after leaving Charlottesville. Events to look forward toTBA: Young Alumni PanelHear recently-graduated alumni give advice on graduating and transitioning to working life, graduate life, and non-traditional post-grad adventures. Find out what it's like to be an alumnus/alumna of this great university. Ask them any question you can think of about the 'real world' and whether or not you're really going to like it; they'll give you the brutal (and comforting) truths. TBA: City FairsKnow where you're living next year, or trying to decide? Alumni from the U.Va. clubs in D.C., New York, Boston and other cities will be on hand to give advice on where to live, work and play. TBA: President's DinnerA free, catered dinner at the President's house on Carr's Hill with remarks from President Casteen. [ June 2013: REUNIONS! ]Alumni Association MembershipI'm not an alumnus/alumna; why join now? Are you trying to rub it in? As a student member of the Alumni Association, you receive 10% off of all non-textbook purchases at the U.Va. bookstore when you show your AA card, get a $100 discount from all Kaplan standard test preparation courses, gain access to the Alumni Association's Career Services resources, are eligible for travel and insurance discounts, and more: see http://www.alumni.virginia.edu/membership/student/benefits.asp. What's the difference between 'alumni,' 'alumnus' and 'alumna'? 'Alumnus' is a male graduate, 'alumna' is a female graduate, and 'alumni' is the plural form. Technically, 'alumni' is the masculine plural and 'alumnae' is the female plural. Thanks for asking! OK, but I don't have any money (yet). You won't pay anything until you finish school, whether you start your job in May or stay in graduate school for a few decades. Once you start working, you can either pay $350 up front for a lifetime membership, or pay on an installment plan - $25 the first year, $50 the second and third year, $75 for another three years and $100 in your seventh and final year, for $450 total. We promise, it's worth it. (Life members get free parking for football games, so you can get your money back in a few seasons.) By the way, can I stay on Facebook after I graduate? Funny you should ask! You can, but you probably shouldn't. Register for HoosOnline, the real-world equivalent to Facebook, at www.hoosonline.com to find undergraduate and alumni/alumnae friends, and start exploring the different resources available to Alumni Association members. (Unfortunately, there's no "poke" function on HoosOnline.) Committee membersPlease contact any of the Alumni Relations committee members if you have suggestions, questions about any of our events or if you want more information about the Alumni Association.
