New E-mail Services Coming Soon (updated July 22, 2008)

Two new options for lifetime e-mail are expected this fall for all U.Va. alumni. You will be able to obtain an @alumni.virginia.edu e-mail account powered by Google Gmail or Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail.

The service is being offered on HoosOnline as an upgrade to the lifetime e-mail forwarding option that has been available for several years. The new accounts will include substantial amounts of free message storage space and other online tools, such as integrated instant messaging, interactive calendars and contact-management programs.

Both U.Va. Windows Live Hotmail and U.Va. Gmail are Web based, and can be accessed from any connection to the Internet.

On April 29, the U.Va. Office of Information Technology and Communications (ITC) will be inviting, by email, all students who, according to the Registrar’s records, will graduate this May—including fourth-years, third-year law students, grad students, etc. to request an account with one or both vendors and queue their account for migration to Google or Microsoft.

A phased roll out of the system to alumni, and existing students, will begin in May. You will be receiving an invitation to sign up via e-mail.

We will continue to provide updates on this page, and on the ITC web page, UVa Student/Alumni Email Transition - Moving Current Students & '06-'07 Alumni to Private Email Vendors.

Features of the new systems:

U.Va. Microsoft Live Hotmail

- 2007 PC Magazine Editors’ Choice Award winner for Web e-mail

- 5 GB of storage

- Choose colors and layout

- Cutting edge e-mail security provided by Microsoft, plus powerful virus scanning and cleaning

- Destroy junk e-mail with a single click

- Looks and feels like Microsoft Outlook—on the Web

U.Va. Google Gmail

- Built on the idea that email can be more intuitive, efficient, and useful. And maybe even fun.

- Less spam—Google's innovative technology keeps unwanted messages out of your inbox

- Provides mobile access via your cell phone

- Lots of space, currently over 6.4 GB, so there's no need to delete messages

Both services include several other useful online tools, including ways to manage your contacts, calendar and instant messaging anywhere, anytime.

U.Va.'s Current Alumni Email Forwarding Service

Establish a permanent "alumni.virginia.edu" address that forwards email to another email account. No matter how many times you change jobs, homes, or even countries, you can stay connected with a consistent email address.

Example:

"YourName@alumni.virginia.edu" can forward email to your account at "YourOtherName@ABCCompany.com."

If you change email accounts, you can come to HoosOnline and then:

"YourName@alumni.virginia.edu" can forward email to "YourNewName@XYZCompany.com."

Please note: Email forwarding is not an email or Internet account that stores mail so you can read and respond to it. It simply forwards email to an email account that you maintain elsewhere.

Log in at the upper right of your screen to see your email forwarding accounts.
